Johns Malenya from Western Province is a veteran Kenyan musician and actor. A master one-man guitarist, Johns first started playing with the late great guitarist George Mukabi in 1952, typically adding a rhythm line by scraping the ribs of a Fanta bottle with a metal rod to the musical style of that era. On completing his Kenya National Youth Service in 1968, Johns lived in Uganda performing in clubs. He returned to Kenya in 1970 and joined the national television 'Voice of Kenya' as an actor playing the role of 'makokha' in the popular VOK moral comedy drama series of the same name. He continues to perform his Rumba style music and his Luhya song 'Omulahi Aliba Wina?' (Who will be perfect?) highlights the perpetual jealousy and hatred in the world.
